The symbol of an elegant woman represents my grandmother. I am always looking through photographs of the 1920s and '30s taken in artistic circles in Paris, hoping to find her in one of them - to visually match all the stories I was told when I was young. Amongst all those anonymous faces I can only find her friends… Hungarian painters, writers and photographers.
As a child, living with her in the '50s, I concentrated only on small details, for instance what were, for me, her embarrassingly fancy shoes (when everybody else was wearing tracksuits and trainers). I never realised at the time her daring in rebelling against conformity.
